This year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) gave us a highly anticipated preview of the latest updates to the Apple Watch operating system. From health tracking breakthroughs to fitness upgrades and connectivity improvements, here are the watchOS 9 features we're most looking forward to.
Health
According to Kevin Lynch, VP of Technology at Apple, watchOS 9 will deliver on some long-awaited health tracking features that have the potential to completely change how we look at health data.
AFib Tracking
There are countless stories of Apple Watch users receiving lifesaving AFib alerts. With watchOS 9, your Apple Watch goes further — providing essential data after an AFib diagnosis to help you and your doctor track the condition over time. You'll be able to record time spent in AFib and view your data directly in the Health app.

Sleep tracking on the Apple Watch has long left much to be desired. watchOS 9 finally delivers: you'll be able to track your sleep cycles, view detailed data on time spent in each cycle, and gain real insight into how you sleep.
Medication Tracking
The new Medications app lets you track your intake of medications, vitamins, and supplements. Log medications directly from your reminders and scan labels using your iPhone for quick setup.
Connectivity
The Apple Watch keeps us connected to ourselves and others. Here are the new interface and connectivity features coming with watchOS 9.
New Watch Faces
Apple announced four new watch faces in watchOS 9, plus updates to the Astronomy watch face — including readily available information on cloud coverage and lunar events.
UI Improvements
The Apple Watch user interface is being optimized for the larger screen sizes in the latest models. watchOS 9 also brings banner notifications and a new iPhone-style Siri interface.
Third-Party Connectivity
New APIs with third-party integrations will allow you to share more directly from your wrist. One standout: a new photo-sharing API that lets you select and share images right from your Apple Watch.
Fitness
No matter your fitness level, watchOS 9 brings meaningful upgrades to how you track and improve your workouts.
Running Form Metrics
Using the accelerometer and gyroscope inside your Apple Watch, watchOS 9 will provide data on your running form that was once reserved for elite athletes — helping you run more efficiently and reduce injury risk.
Workout and Activity App Updates
Create fully custom workouts in the Workout app and take complete control of your exercise routine. The Activity app is also coming to iPhone, allowing users without an Apple Watch to progress through daily fitness goals and close their rings.
